Career choices are growing in the field of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) as more people search for a natural approach emphasizing preventive medicine.

Layoffs and high unemployment have resulted in many people returning to school to investigate jobs with a brighter future, such as those in health care. Within the health care sector, opportunities in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) are increasing rapidly. Pursuing a career in an area such as massage therapy, acupuncture or teaching and counseling can be both personally and financially rewarding.

Massage Therapy

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010, massage therapy will grow faster than average over the next several years as people learn of the health benefits. Many therapists specialize in a certain area such as Swedish or sports massage. Hourly wages range from $8-$33 per hour and often include tips. Education requirements vary by state but most programs include 500 hours or more of total class time. Examination and licensing may also be required in some states.

The environment and work itself are generally pleasant, though this is a physical job requiring considerable standing. Client sessions may last from a few minutes to an hour or more. Many massage therapists are self-employed and work part-time in an office. Job opportunities also exist in hospitals, fitness centers, spas, resorts and hotels. The use of dim lighting, incense and candles creates a pleasant, relaxing atmosphere.

Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, acupuncture is, "an originally Chinese practice of inserting fine needles through the skin at specific points, especially to cure disease or relieve pain." More than 3 million Americans use acupuncture every year according to the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Salaries range from $24,000 to $100,000 or more. Training takes 3-4 years and a bachelor’s or associate’s degree is required. Students enrolled in programs approved by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine are eligible for the national certification exams required in many states.

Acupuncturists work in offices, spending 30-60 minutes with each client. Some acupuncturists work in a clinic with other alternative practitioners while others may be employed at hospitals or educational institutions. The physical stress of this job is not too intense but long periods of standing are required.

Education and Counseling Jobs in Alternative Health

Counselors work with clients on healthy living and provide information on alternative therapies. Educators may teach small classes in the community such as continuing education courses at community colleges. Salary information is lacking in this field, but depends largely on factors such as education, location and hours worked. As the popularity of CAM continues to increase, so too will the demand for those who can provide guidance on implementing these practices in daily life.

Work most often occurs in the home, office or classroom. Appointments are scheduled beforehand, making this flexible career a good choice for stay-at-home parents or those looking for a second part-time income. There is very little physical stress involved in this career, an advantage over many other careers in health care.

The Path to a Rewarding Future in Alternative Medicine

Careers in CAM are expected to explode in number over the next several years, making it the perfect time for a transition into this exciting field. As the American population ages, more people are searching for natural and preventive approaches to healthy living. Now may be the perfect time to enter one of these exciting fields of study. As a member of the alternative health care community, financial incentive and meaningful work will come together to provide career fulfillment while improving the lives of others.
